Police on Wednesday arrested housemaid, Ayesha, from Nalchity area in Barishal in connection with the murder of Laila Afroz,48, and her daughter Nafisa Lawal Binte Aziz at a Mohammadpur flat in Dhaka.

DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Muhammad Talebur Rahman confirmed Ayesha’s arrest and said legal proceedings are underway.

Earlier, on Monday, December 8, Laila and her daughter were killed in their seventh-floor apartment on Shahjahan Road in Mohammadpur, Dhaka.

Their bodies were buried in Natore on Tuesday, December 9.

CCTV footage from the building shows a woman leaving the apartment after the killings, wearing a school uniform and carrying a bag.

Police reports indicate that Nafisa sustained multiple deep cuts to her neck, while Laila suffered numerous injuries. Both were attacked with a sharp weapon while the assailant wore gloves. Analysis of CCTV footage shows that Ayesha entered the apartment in a burqa and later exited disguised in Nafisa’s school uniform with a mask.

Family sources said that Nafisa’s father, Azizul Islam, had left for school around 7:00 am and returned at 11:30 am to discover the bodies. Ayesha had been hired just four days earlier and had full access to the apartment.

A case has been lodged with Mohammapur Police Station in this connection on Tuesday, December 9.
