Dhaka seeks arrest, deportation of Hadi attack suspects if they enter India

Dhaka has urged New Delhi to arrest and deport the attackers of Inqilab Mancha convener Osman Hadi if they enter Indian territory, following an alleged assault on the political activist.

The call was made on Sunday, December 14, when the Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma to lodge a formal protest, according to a ministry statement.

During the meeting, Bangladesh also raised concerns over ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s presence in India, alleging that she is attempting to incite violence and sabotage the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Dhaka conveyed its “deep concern” to the Indian government over what it described as provocative statements and activities that pose a serious threat to Bangladesh’s law and order and democratic process.

The interim government further alleged that fugitive Awami League members residing in India are helping to plan, organise and carry out terrorist activities in Bangladesh aimed at disrupting the national polls.

It called on India to take urgent and effective steps to prevent such activities and to play a responsible role as a neighbouring country in upholding justice and protecting democracy in Bangladesh.

Dhaka also iterated its demand for the extradition of Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to face court verdicts in Bangladesh.

This marks at least the fifth time the Indian high commissioner has been summoned during the tenure of the interim government over various issues.

Meanwhile, Osman Hadi – spokesperson of Inqilab Mancha and a potential independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency – is reported to be in stable condition.

He is receiving treatment at Evercare Hospital after sustaining serious injuries in the attack.

In response, High Commissioner Pranay Verma said India expects peaceful elections to be held in Bangladesh and remains ready to extend all necessary cooperation to Dhaka to that end.
