Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said on Monday that the government has authorized the highest level of security to ensure the safe arrival of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, who is scheduled to return to the country on December 25.
Speaking to reporters following the 18th meeting of the Advisory Council Committee on Law and Order on this day, the Adviser said, "Maximum security measures have already been taken to ensure the safe arrival of Tarique Rahman in the country."
During the briefing, which also addressed security preparations for the upcoming Jagannath University Central Students' Union (JnUCSU) polls, Adviser Jahangir stated that law enforcement agencies have been explicitly instructed to remain fully alert and maintain close coordination.
He emphasized the government's unwavering commitment to public safety, ensuring that the high-profile event proceeds without any disruption or threat to law and order.
Addressing concerns regarding personal safety, the Adviser disclosed that the government has already assigned gunmen to 20 individuals identified as being on "hit lists" or facing significant security threats.
“Those who are on hit lists or concerned about their security have already been given gunmen,” he added.
Responding to journalists' queries about a reported risk list involving approximately 50 members of the Gono Odhikar Parishad, he explained that the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), National Security Intelligence (NSI) and the Special Branch (SB) jointly assessed the threats to prepare the final list for protection.
“The Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), National Security Intelligence (NSI) and Special Branch (SB) have jointly identified those at security risk and prepared a list. Gunmen have been provided accordingly,” the Home Adviser added.
He further noted that while some individuals declined the offer of personal gunmen for personal reasons, intelligence agencies continue to ensure their safety through other necessary measures.
"The intelligence agencies are continuously monitoring the situation to maintain law and order and prevent any possible attacks," the Adviser stated, adding that security coverage could be expanded to include additional individuals if necessary.
