Bangladesh’s participation in the 2026 T20 World Cup has been uncertain for a long time. The BCB has repeatedly maintained its stance of not being willing to play the tournament in India. A final decision could come by January 21.

ESPN Cricinfo reported that in a meeting held in Dhaka last Saturday, the ICC clearly informed the BCB of this deadline. During the discussion, the BCB reiterated its previous position that it wants to participate in the World Cup, but outside India, proposing Sri Lanka as an alternative venue as a co-hosting country.

However, the ICC is reluctant to change the scheduled fixtures. According to the current schedule, Bangladesh is in Group C. In Saturday’s meeting, the BCB requested to be moved to Group B and swap groups with Ireland, whose matches are scheduled in Sri Lanka. The ICC rejected this proposal, stating that there is no security risk for Bangladesh in India.

Initially, Ireland was reported to agree to the group switch, but later it was confirmed that they no longer consent. In this situation, if the BCB ultimately refuses to send the team, the ICC may announce a replacement team, with Scotland potentially taking the spot based on current rankings.

Several BCB directors have confirmed that they will not compromise on playing in India. The BCB has made this clear to the ICC. One director said, “We want to play in the World Cup, but outside India. The safety of the players and other team members is our top priority.”

Overall, Bangladesh’s participation now largely depends on the ICC’s decision. In this complex scenario, the World Cup participation could be secured only if ICC President Jay Shah takes the initiative to find a solution. Otherwise, with time running short, Bangladesh’s participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup remains uncertain.
