Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed has said that work on the pay scale for government officials and employees is ongoing, but it requires a large amount of funding. Once the country’s economy becomes stronger, the implementation of the pay scale will see the light of day.

He made these remarks on Monday (19 January) while responding to journalists after inaugurating a campaign fair for the ‘Yes’ vote, as part of the referendum, at Hasan Ali School ground in Chandpur town.

Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed said that no work had been done on the pay scale of government officials and employees over the past 10 years. “We have formed a pay commission, and work on this issue is ongoing. Besides, due to various initiatives taken to revive the economy, the country’s foreign currency reserves have increased from 18 billion dollars to the current level of 32 billion dollars,” he added.

Emphasizing that aligning the pay scale with the market system is just as important as funding, Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed said that this would require substantial resources. However, once the country’s economy becomes stronger, the pay scale implementation will materialize.

He also expressed hope that these issues would be implemented by a future elected government. Taking a firm stance against corruption, the Finance Adviser said, “We want not corruption, but good governance and an accountable government, which future generations will benefit from.”

He clarified that there is no scope for misinterpretation regarding the ‘Yes’ vote in the referendum, noting that many people mistakenly believe it to be the agenda of a particular political party. “In reality, it is suitable for all pro-democracy parties in the country and is a path toward ensuring good governance,” he said. He also stressed that reforms are needed not only for good governance, but also in other important sectors such as education, health, culture, and religion.

Earlier, before inaugurating the ‘Yes’ vote campaign fair, the Finance Adviser visited various stalls at the fair. On the same day, he also spoke at an exchange meeting with government and private officials of different levels, as well as members of law enforcement agencies, at the Chandpur Sadar Upazila Parishad auditorium.
