Investigators have said that Masidur Rahman Samrat (alias), a homeless man arrested in connection with a series of six murders in Savar, referred to killing as “Thirty Four” or “Sunday Monday Close” during police interrogation. He reportedly told police, “Whenever I saw any mad or homeless person involved in immoral sexual activities, I would ‘Thirty Four’ or ‘Sunday Monday Close’ them.”
Savar Police Station Inspector (Operations) Helal Uddin said that Samrat is not mentally ill. Rather, excessive substance abuse had made him mentally unstable, and at one stage killing people became an addiction for him. He added that Masidur Rahman Samrat is not his real name; he used an alias to remain in hiding, and his home is not in Savar either. Efforts are underway to identify his true identity.
According to Helal Uddin, after arriving in Savar the serial killer spent most nights at the Model Mosque in the Savar Bus Stand area. After killing an elderly woman named Asma Begum on 4 July 2025, he took shelter in an abandoned building of the municipal community center. Over the next five months, five more bodies were recovered one after another from that building. Although regular surveillance was maintained, he could not be arrested at the time due to a lack of concrete evidence.
Police said that on Friday night, during surveillance, a teenage girl was seen lying on Samrat’s bed at the community center. The following Saturday night, he allegedly killed the girl along with another person and burned their bodies. On Sunday afternoon, after the bodies were recovered and CCTV footage was analyzed, his involvement in the murders was confirmed. He was arrested on Sunday evening. On Monday, in a confessional statement before the court, he admitted responsibility for all six murders.
According to police, although he would roam around the police station area during the daytime, he stayed at the Dhaka–Aricha highway and pedestrian bridge areas late at night. He would lure homeless men and women to the community center and kill them.
Savar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Arman Ali said the accused has confessed to his involvement in the murders. Efforts are ongoing to identify the victims. He also said investigators are examining whether Samrat may have been involved in other crimes beyond these six killings.
