In a swift two-hour operation, U.S. forces kidnapped Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. According to reports from multiple media outlets, months before the U.S. operation in Venezuela, American intelligence agencies had been in contact with the country’s interior minister, Diosdado Cabello.

Media reports claim that sensitive information, including details of Maduro’s security arrangements, had already reached the United States. These secrets were allegedly leaked by someone considered a close associate of the former Venezuelan president. However, it is still unclear whether Cabello was directly involved in the entire conspiracy. What the reports do confirm is that he was in contact with U.S. intelligence agencies.

On the night of December 2 (local time), Maduro was kidnapped by the U.S. military’s Delta Force. In an operation lasting just two hours on Venezuelan soil, Maduro and his wife were taken from the bedroom of the presidential residence and detained. The operation was named “Operation Absolute Resolve.” Currently, Maduro and his wife are reportedly being held at the notorious Brooklyn jail in New York. After detaining Maduro, the United States announced that he would be tried in a New York court.

The U.S. alleges that leftist leader Maduro returned to power by rigging the most recent election. Ignoring strong objections from the U.S. administration, Maduro reassumed the presidency of the oil-rich South American nation. U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly accused the Maduro government of running drug trafficking networks. Additionally, Venezuela has been accused of attempting to facilitate illegal migration across the southern border of the United States.
