The International Crimes Tribunal has sentenced former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman to death for crimes against humanity over the killing of six people during the July mass uprising in Chankharpul, Dhaka.

The verdict was delivered on Monday by a three-member tribunal led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder. Two other senior police officials—former Joint Commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakrabarty and former Additional Deputy Commissioner of Ramna Zone Shah Alam Md Akhtarul Islam—were also sentenced to death.

Among the remaining accused, former Assistant Commissioner of Ramna Zone Mohammad Imrul received six years in prison, while former Shahbagh Police Station Inspector Arshad Hossain was sentenced to four years. Three police constables were each given three-year prison terms.

The tribunal observed that the accused abused state power and were directly involved in the planned killing of unarmed civilians, constituting crimes against humanity. Several convicts remain absconding, while others were present in court during the verdict.
