Former US President Donald Trump has warned Iraq against reinstating former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, saying such a move could push the country back into poverty and instability.

In a social media post, Trump stated that the United States would not support Iraq if al-Maliki returns to power. He added that without American assistance, Iraq would struggle to become successful or prosperous.

Al-Maliki served as Iraq’s prime minister from 2006 to 2014. His tenure was marked by political turmoil and security challenges, including the rise of ISIS in 2013–2014. Recently, a Shia coalition nominated him again for the premiership following its victory in parliamentary elections.

US officials have cautioned that Iraq’s leadership choices will determine whether the country moves toward sovereignty and strength or slides back into fragmentation and decline.
