The High Court of Bangladesh has declared the government’s agreement with UAE-based DP World to operate the Neumuring Container Terminal at Chittagong Port legal. Justice Zafar Ahmed’s single-judge bench delivered the verdict on Thursday, confirming the legality of the contract process.
The agreement, signed on February 17, 2019, under a public-private partnership, had faced legal challenges filed by the Bangladesh Young Economists Forum. Previously, a two-judge bench issued a conflicting opinion in December of last year, prompting the Chief Justice to refer the case to Justice Zafar Ahmed for final adjudication.
The ruling secures the legal foundation of the contract, ensuring continuity in port operations and boosting confidence for international investors. Experts note that this decision is likely to attract more foreign investment and strengthen the governance and management of Bangladesh’s ports.
