Leaders and activists of the National Citizen Party (NCP) staged a protest in front of the National Parliament building on Thursday, pressing three key demands including the impeachment of the President.

The protest took place on Manik Mia Avenue near the parliament entrance on the first day of the 13th parliamentary session.

NCP spokesperson Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan led the demonstration, where party supporters held placards highlighting their demands.

The party put forward three main demands: the swearing-in of a constitutional reform council and implementation of reforms based on a public referendum, impeachment of the President and trial over the July killings.

NCP leaders alleged that the President had violated his oath and therefore had no right to participate in the parliamentary session.

Meanwhile, newly elected Members of Parliament began arriving at the parliament complex from early morning to attend the first session.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Opposition Leader Dr. Shafiqur Rahman also entered the parliament building ahead of the session.

Members of the ruling party said the new parliament would work to fulfill public expectations and implement the commitments made to the people.

On the other hand, opposition lawmakers urged BNP members to take an oath supporting constitutional reforms.

At around 11 am, parliamentary proceedings officially began following the President’s call to convene the session.

This marks the first parliamentary session since the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024, making it a politically significant event in Bangladesh’s current political landscape.
