Prime Minister Tarique Rahman arrived in Syedpur of Nilphamari on Monday morning to inaugurate a nationwide canal dredging initiative aimed at boosting agriculture and improving irrigation facilities.

According to officials, the prime minister landed at Syedpur Airport around 10:15 am by air. Upon arrival, he was warmly welcomed by local political leaders, senior government officials and party activists with floral greetings.

The visit marks the beginning of a large-scale government program to restore canals and waterways across the country. From the airport, the prime minister departed for Dinajpur’s Kaharol upazila by a special bulletproof bus.

There, at the Balrampur Sahapara area, he is scheduled to inaugurate the re-excavation of a 12-kilometer canal, formally launching the nationwide canal restoration program.

Officials said the government believes the project will significantly improve irrigation systems, increase agricultural productivity and help reduce waterlogging in several regions.

During the ceremony, the prime minister will also virtually inaugurate canal dredging activities simultaneously in 54 other districts through digital technology.

Apart from the official engagements, the prime minister has a personal program scheduled during the visit. He will travel to the Faridpur graveyard in Dinajpur town to offer prayers at the graves of his maternal grandparents and other relatives.

Security has been tightened in both Nilphamari and Dinajpur districts ahead of the prime minister’s visit, with a large number of law enforcement personnel deployed to ensure safety.
