Government to Maintain Fuel Price Stability Despite Global Surge; PM Tarique Rahman Orders Crackdown on Smuggling

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Saturday (March 28) highlighted the government's success in maintaining stable fuel prices within the country, despite significant price hikes in the international market. Speaking to reporters after a meeting of the ruling party's parliamentary committee at the National Parliament, the Minister attributed this stability to the government’s strategic subsidy policy aimed at safeguarding the agricultural sector.

The Minister emphasized that the primary objective is to ensure uninterrupted agricultural production during the ongoing Boro season. "While many nations have resorted to closing educational institutions to save energy, Bangladesh has avoided such extremes due to well-planned management of resources like electricity and fertilizers," Ahmed stated.

However, the lower domestic price of fuel has raised concerns about potential smuggling to neighboring countries. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, during the meeting, issued a stern directive to the relevant ministries to intensify surveillance along the borders. The Prime Minister underscored that any attempt to smuggle subsidized fuel must be met with rigorous legal action to protect the national interest.

Addressing the legislative agenda, the Home Minister provided updates on the 133 ordinances issued during the interim period. A special committee is currently reviewing these executive orders and is expected to submit its final report to the Parliament by April 2.

Furthermore, marking the first 40 days of the current term, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman urged Members of Parliament to communicate the progress of the election manifesto to their constituents. He stressed the importance of transparency regarding the government's early achievements and the challenges it has successfully navigated since taking office. The upcoming parliamentary discussions on the President's speech are expected to focus heavily on these strategic milestones and future policy directions.
