Chittagong University (CU) Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Abu Taher has submitted his resignation, said its Registrar Professor KM Nur Ahmad on Monday (August 12).

Prior to his resignation, Professor Taher had requested to be relieved from his duties as Vice-Chancellor, citing personal reasons. His resignation comes in the wake of increasing student protests and demands for his removal.

The calls for his resignation intensified following the university's handling of the recent anti-discrimination student movement.

During the protests, the Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of the ruling party, allegedly engaged in violence, which the Vice-Chancellor failed to prevent.

The students accused him of remaining silent during the incident, leading to widespread dissatisfaction.

As tensions escalated, the protesting students issued an ultimatum, demanding his resignation by a specific deadline.

In response to the growing pressure on August 9, several key university officials, including members of the Proctorial Body and Provosts of three dormitories, tendered their resignation letters. Then other dormitory provosts followed suit.

It has been reported that Dr. Md. Abu Taher, after requesting to be relieved of his Vice-Chancellor duties, applied to rejoin the university's Department of Management as a professor.

According to the university's Registrar, his request was accepted, and he has been officially relieved from his position as Vice-Chancellor.
