323 municipality mayors removed from posts

The interim government has removed 323 municipality mayors from their respective positions across the country.

These mayors were elected during the tenure of the Awami League government.

The Local Government Division issued a gazette notification in this regard on Sunday (August 18).

The mayors have been removed from their respective positions by applying section 32(Ka) of the Local Government (Municipality) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024, the notification said.

According to a government statement, the government can remove mayors and councilors of any city corporation and municipality in special circumstances. Similarly, the chairman and members of the zilla parishad and the chairman, vice chairman and female vice chairman of the upazila parishad can be removed. At the same time, the government can appoint administrators in these positions.
