Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus has called on the public, as well as relevant government and non-government stakeholders, to work together towards achieving literacy goals and ensuring quality education for all.

He made the appeal in a message delivered on the occasion of International Literacy Day.

In his statement, Dr Yunus expressed his delight that, like many other countries, Bangladesh is observing International Literacy Day on 8th September 2024.

"The primary objective of celebrating International Literacy Day is to raise awareness among the people about the importance of education and literacy, and to transform them into valuable human resources. Education is one of the fundamental human rights," he said.

Highlighting the important role of education in the development of a nation, he said, "Education is the key instrument for nation-building. Both formal and informal educational programmes are essential in the quest for a Bangladesh free of illiteracy. Alongside literacy in one’s mother tongue, our children, adolescents, and youth must be provided with opportunities to learn one or more additional languages to enhance their communication skills."

Dr Yunus emphasised that literacy in multiple languages fosters strong connections between different nations, cultures, and languages. "Through improving communication skills, we can elevate the quality of individual lives, accelerate national development, and promote peace. The theme of this year's Literacy Day aligns with these goals."

"The foundation of a nation is built on education, and literacy is the first step in that journey," Dr Yunus said.

He went on saying, "I hope that all relevant government and non-government organisations will remain committed to implementing programmes aimed at achieving literacy goals and ensuring quality education for everyone. I urge all stakeholders to work collectively, with the involvement of the public, to realise these objectives."

Dr Yunus reflected on this year's theme for International Literacy Day, ‘Promoting Multilingual Education: Literacy for Mutual Understanding and Peace’. He stated that the theme, which in Bangla translates to ‘Bohu Bhashay Shikkhar Proshar: Parashporik Shamzutta O Shantir Jonno Shakhkhorta,’ is particularly relevant in today's context.

International Literacy Day is observed worldwide on September 8, with the goal of promoting literacy and enhancing awareness of its importance in national development and personal growth.
