At least three people lost their lives and five others injured in a gas cylinder explosion at a restaurant in Keraniganj on Saturday evening (October 5).

The explosion occurred around 7:30 PM at Rohitpur Boarding Market in Rohitpur Union, according to locals.

Two firefighting units managed to extinguish the blaze by 8:50 PM.

Sohrab Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Keraniganj Model Police Station, quoting locals, said: “The cylinder exploded with a loud blast at Gharoa Restaurant in the market. The cylinder, placed in front of a kebab shop, was struck by a speeding Nababganj-bound covered van, triggering the explosion. The fire quickly spread, engulfing Gharoa Restaurant, where three people were killed and five others trapped inside were injured.”

Keraniganj Upazila Fire Station master, Md. Kajol Mia, confirmed that the bodies had been recovered from the restaurant. The fire also spread to several nearby shops, causing additional damage.

All the deceased were inside the restaurant at the time of the incident. As of Saturday night, the identities of the victims had yet to be confirmed.
