The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has upheld the High Court’s verdict acquitting BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case.

The order was issued on Monday (March 3) by a three-member bench led by Justice Md. Ashfaqul Islam.

Earlier, on November 27, the High Court acquitted Khaleda Zia from her seven-year sentence in the case.

Following the verdict, the state and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed appeals against the acquittal.

In October 2018, a special judge’s court had sentenced the BNP chairperson to seven years of rigorous imprisonment in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case.

After the political shift on August 5, 2024, Khaleda Zia was gradually acquitted from all cases through legal proceedings.
