Press Secretary Expresses Optimism Over Hasina's Extradition

During the recent BIMSTEC summit in Bangkok, Thailand, Chief Advisor Dr Muhammad Yunus held his first-ever bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. At the meeting, Dr Yunus formally requested the extradition of ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. According to Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, Modi's response to the request was not negative, offering a glimmer of hope that Hasina may eventually be returned to Dhaka.

In a Facebook post published Saturday afternoon, Shafiqul Alam shared insights from the high-level discussion, expressing optimism about the potential outcome.

"Prime Minister Modi showed great respect toward Professor Yunus during the bilateral meeting," wrote Alam. "He praised Professor Yunus' contributions and remarked, 'Even when we maintained strong ties with Sheikh Hasina, we witnessed the disrespect she showed toward you. Yet, we continued to hold you in high regard.'"

When the topic of Sheikh Hasina's extradition was raised, Modi did not respond negatively. "We are confident that Hasina will one day be returned to Dhaka," Alam stated, "and that justice will be served in what may become the trial of the century."

The meeting also reflected a broader strategic shift in India's approach to its relationship with Bangladesh. According to Alam, Prime Minister Modi emphasized that India's commitment lies with the people of Bangladesh—not with any single political party or individual.

Echoing statements he has made in recent months, Dr Yunus reiterated that Bangladesh seeks a relationship with India that is based on fairness, equality, and mutual respect.
