Bangladesh to decide election timing

European Union (EU) Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller has said that the timing of the national election is entirely up to the Government of Bangladesh.

However, he underscored that the EU also recognises the need for electoral reforms.

He made the remarks on Monday (May 5) at a “DCAB Talk” event organised by the Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) at the National Press Club’s VIP Lounge in Dhaka.

Responding to a question from journalists, Ambassador Miller said the EU supports free and fair elections and is willing to assist in the process. “But it is not for the EU to decide when the election will be held. That is for the Bangladesh government to determine,” he said, adding that the EU is not putting any pressure in this regard.

He stressed the importance of completing necessary reforms before the polls.

Asked about the humanitarian situation in Rakhine, the ambassador said both sides need humanitarian support and that it must be ensured that all affected people receive aid equally.

On the July public uprising, he stated that transparency must be ensured in holding those responsible for deaths and injuries accountable.

Ambassador Miller also mentioned that the recent political changes present a major opportunity for reform. “This is a chance that must be used wisely,” he said, expressing hope that political parties and the interim government will work together to implement reforms.

In response to a question on money laundering, he said if the current government wants to recover funds allegedly transferred to EU countries, it must engage with the respective states with accurate information and evidence.

DCAB President AKM Moinuddin and General Secretary Arifuzzaman Mamun also spoke at the event.
