After spending four months in London for medical treatment, BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has returned to Bangladesh. She has already departed from the airport and is on her way to her residence, Firoza.
Her arrival flight—a special air ambulance provided by the Qatari royal family—landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 10:42 am on Tuesday (May 6).
Following a layover in Qatar, the flight departed from Doha Airport at 6:05 am Bangladesh time. Before that, the air ambulance departed from London's Heathrow Airport at 9:35 pm (Bangladesh time) on Monday. Her son Tarique Rahman and granddaughter Zaima Rahman were present at Heathrow to see her off. Many BNP leaders and activists also gathered near the VIP terminal with banners and posters to show their support.
To welcome Khaleda Zia back, BNP members had made arrangements along the route from the airport to her home in Gulshan. However, due to the ongoing SSC examinations, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir urged supporters to stay on the sidewalks rather than crowding the streets. He made this appeal via a post on his verified Facebook account on Monday (May 5). He also called on law enforcement to ensure that public roads remain clear.
Khaleda Zia travelled to London on January 8 for advanced medical care. After learning of her condition, the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, arranged an air ambulance for her journey. She is now returning home aboard the same aircraft provided by the Qatari royal family.
