Former secretary Bhuiyan Shafiqul Islam has been arrested in a case filed over an alleged anti-government conspiracy.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Deputy Commissioner (Media) Muhammad Talebur Rahman on Tuesday said that the Detective Branch (DB) arrested Shafiqul Islam along with seven other leaders and activists of the banned Awami League and its affiliated organizations.

DB’s Additional Commissioner Md. Shafiqul Islam said he was arrested in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Shahbagh Police Station, following information about secret collusion with Abdul Latif Siddiqui, Abu Alam Shahid Khan, and others.

Shafiqul Islam served as the secretary of the Planning Division in 2013. Later, in 2015, he was appointed as secretary to the President’s Office.

Earlier, on Monday, former secretary Abu Alam Mohammad Shahid Khan was also arrested.

Meanwhile, former Awami League presidium member Abdul Latif Siddiqui and several others were shown arrested after being detained from a ‘Manch 71’ event at Dhaka Reporters Unity in the same case in which Shafiqul Islam was held.
